Motorists on Dudley Road heading out of Birmingham city centre faced several hours of traffic congestion as police closed major route to investigate a collision between a pedestrian and a car.

A man suffered head injuries when he was involved in the incident close to the Tesco store on Spring Hill, near City Hospital, in Ladywood at about 12.30pm on Wednesday.

The A457 Dudley Road was closed westbound between Ladywood Middleway and Icknield Port Road so police could investigate the scene.

Traffic was diverted around the busy commuter route until the road was re-opened, at about 5.30pm.

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said they were not sure of the severity of the pedestrian’s injuries.

“If there is a chance that the injuries will be life threatening or life changing we would cordon off the scene to proceed with a thorough investigation,” he added.

Police could not say when the road, which is one of the major links between Birmingham and the Black Country, would reopen.
