People living and working in Moseley were divided over the issue of extended pub opening hours and whether the Goose at the Fighting Cocks should have had its application turned down.

John Charlton, owner of the village bakery who lives on Persia Road, said: "It doesn't really effect me but I do not think they should be allowed to open late. There hasn't really been too much trouble around here but there are already 12 pubs in the area and that is too much."

John O'Sullivan, aged 35, a bar manager in the area, said: "I don't mind if it stays open late, they have already managed to get rid of a lot of trouble in the area." But Francis O'Reilly, who runs a family florist business in Moseley, said: "I don't see the point in people going out all night and then not remembering it in the morning. We have enough problems without extending the opening times." Ben Malloug, aged 51, a worker at the Little Italy restaurant in Moseley, said: "As a worker, I encourage them, every business should be allowed to extend. It is the problem of the police to educate the people about how they should behave. If drunk people want food I refuse to serve them. Every weekend we have the same things, a few thugs, a few drunks, but just like everywhere else. "

Steve Berridge, aged 40, a graphic artist from Anderton Park Road, Moseley, said: "I wish all the pubs were open until 1am. It should be up to the manager. If 300 people still want a beer then I think it is a bit rude to chuck them out at a certain time.

"It is when people are all chucked out together at 11pm that problems start. If people could stay until one then they would filter out gradually. It is on the High Street so I think it is okay."

Catherine Lavin, aged 37, a student from Edgbaston, added: "Moseley has always been renowned as a social area. There should be more police to control any problems. The few people who cannot handle their drinks should not ruin it for everyone else."

And Jay Arnold, aged 29, a landscape gardener from Oxford Road, Moseley, said: "Other pubs in the area have late- night licences so I don't see a problem. If it was in a residential area then there would be a problem."
