A motorist in his 20s is in a critical condition in hospital after his car crashed into a tree stump in Shropshire.

The man, who has not been named, suffered serious head injuries and was airlifted to Birmingham's Selly Oak Hospital, where he is being treated in intensive care.

He crashed on the outskirts of Shifnal.

A passenger in the Volkswagen Golf, a man in his late teens, suffered serious leg, arm and back injuries and was also airlifted to hospital after the accident in Haughton Road on Saturday.

West Mercia Police, which closed the road for around six hours, said a further passenger, a man also aged in his 20s, sustained minor injuries and was treated at the Princess Royal Hospital before being discharged.

Constable Nick Allbutt, of Shifnal Police Station, appealed for anyone who saw what happened or the lead-up to the collision to get in touch.

"We have already spoken to a number of witnesses but believe there may have been others who might have seen the crash itself," the officer said.
