John Reid went walkabout in Birmingham, but Kathryn Morgan discovered he wasn't quite on message...
The message from Health Secretary John Reid is loud and clear.
Forget tactical voting, vote Labour or the country will end up with a Conservative government.
Although for the uninformed, it was difficult to ascertain which party Mr Reid was actually representing when he went on walkabout in Birmingham city centre yesterday.
Political tensions were understandably running high the day before the General Election so perhaps Mr Reid could be excused for his initial politically-confused ranting.
To anybody within earshot he berated a vote for the Tories, he lambasted a vote for the Lib Dems - but said almost nothing about why anyone should vote Labour.
Perhaps he can now sympathise with us poor voters.
Delivering a dire warning to Labour supporters that it would take just a tenth of them to stay at home to return a Conservative government, Mr Reid said: "Over the years, incompetent and, even unpopular governments, do get elected if there is a very low turnout".
His belief is that any voter who hasn't ticked the Labour box means the Conservatives will be let in "through the back door" to government.
"If you get a Liberal Democrat MP elected instead of a Labour MP you are helping to put Michael Howard in power," he said.
But, Dr Reid what about Labour's health policies? How are they going to tackle waiting lists? The spread of MRSA? Will PFI really work? So many questions...
