It's at the heart of the nation, certainly when it comes to geography.

But a large portion of the UK population still has problems locating Birmingham. Or Manchester, Leeds and Bristol.

More than one in ten Britons cannot place the cities on a map of the UK, according to a survey.

The lack of geographical knowledge included five per cent of those questioned mistaking London for another city, while a significant 19 per cent failed to pinpoint Hull and Edinburgh and Glasgow were regularly confused.

The study, by Insight Guides, asked 1,000 adults to identify cities already marked on the map.

While 12 per cent of people could not place Manchester, 11 per cent struggled with Leeds and ten per cent failed to find Birmingham or Bristol.

Liverpool and Norwich were the best identified cities with 96 per cent and 97 per cent getting them right respectively.

Jeremy Westwood, of Insight Guides, said: "We were amazed by the ignorance and basic elementary errors that a worryingly high percentage of the interviewees made. Major cities, home to millions of people, were being placed hundreds of miles from their rightful place on a map.

"In some cases, pass rates were below 50 per cent."
