Produce from all over the Planet
At Planet Produce in Bretforton, Evesham, rows upon rows of vegetables are stacked in a refrigerated warehouse.
The company, with an annual turnover of #11 million, buys vegetables from three or four growers in Evesham during the summer months as well as other UK producers throughout the year. The vegetables are then distributed to suppliers or direct to the catering industry.
The company imports vegetables to make sure seasonal vegetables are always available and produce not grown in the UK at all is also on offer. The centre acts as a middleman between farmer and customer, offering customers guaranteed supply and farmers a guaranteed customer.
Nick Smith, technical director, said: ?The consumer is far more aware of food and although seasonality is a nice idea, the consumer wants choice and they want imported produce 12 months of the year and we have got that now.
?This area is particularly good at growing endives and we look to procure the best possible produce from Evesham at this time of year.
?What we try and do is give them programmes so they can grow with certainty and we can guarantee our customers supply. Our growers haven?t got to go out and find their own customers.?
