Dear Editor, the disgraceful inadequacy of parking facilities in the city centre caused me to miss Ex Cathedra’ performance of Bach’s Christmas Oratorio at Birmingham Town Hall last Sunday.
After arriving in plenty of time for the 4pm performance I then added immeasurably to the country’s carbon footprint by touring the one-way system several times before eventually finding a space deep in the Jewellery Quarter.
Unfortunately, I have a painful foot condition and I knew the long walk to Town Hall and back would make it worse. Sadly, I cut my losses and returned home.
OK, so the Christmas season is upon us, with all the razzmatazz of shops open on Sundays and the indispensable Frankfurt Market. But why are we not allowed to park on single yellow lines in Birmingham City Centre on Sundays? And why are the motorcycle-designated and electric-charging bays empty?
I even tried to brave the multi-storey car-parks, but the queues outside were prohibitive. There was so much wasted space on the streets. A black mark against Birmingham City Council.
