This Florida-style retirement village is set to be built in Birmingham at a cost of £43 million.

The village is planned for the former Lucas site in Shaftmoor Lane, Acocks Green.

There will be 278 one and two-bedroom apartments around a village-style centre with community facilities. A detailed planning application is expected to be put in by the end of August and the village could be open by 2015.

On the site there will also be a new Morrisons supermarket and 120 family homes.

The scheme is expected to provide 400 jobs, as well as hundreds more during the construction phase.

The village will be the fourth run by the ExtraCare Charitable Trust in Birmingham. Its first in New Oscott opened last year and construction is underway on the second in Pannel Croft, Aston, which is due to open in 2013.

Work is due to start on the third in Hagley Road, Edgbaston, in October.

All have been oversubscribed and have waiting lists.

The apartments will be a mix of rental, part ownership and outright purchase and are available to the over-55s.

Residents live in their own apartments but have access to the village centre, which has on average 18 health and leisure facilities.

A third of the flats will be set aside for residents with care needs, including dementia, and wardens will be on site 24 hours a day to enable residents to live independently.
