Midland companies which have created secure, quality places where people can live and work safely are to receive design awards.

Research shows the Secured by Design awards - presented by West Midlands Police - can reduce burglary and car crime by 50 per cent and criminal damage by 25 per cent.

Pc Michael Quinney, crime reduction and architectural liaison officer for Handsworth, said: " These awards acknowledge the good standard of design and build quality that many architects, developers and builders take when making buildings safer for all who live and work there.

"Reducing crime and fear of crime is a significant result of good design practice. West Midlands Police believe that starting off with a good basis of security design is essential.

"I'd like to congratulate all the award winners for their help and contributions in making the West Midlands a safer place."
