This year's Warwickshire Taverners Trophy started in bright sunshine - in stark contrast to last year when the first fixture was played in biting cold and near darkness.

And Deloitte were wearing sunny smiles after they got off to a winning start by beating lawyers Gateley.

Gateley batted first and James White helped them to a competitive total of 162 in the face of some very good bowling.

The Deloitte opening bowler was very menacing and taken out of the attack after just one over for which the Gateley skipper was most grateful for.

The Deloitte openers got them off to a flying start but with the match taken into the last over the accountants got home with four balls to spare.

DTZ beat DWF in the week’s other match.

DWF reached a solid total with scores from David Price and Daryl Shorthouse, Price continuing from last year when he lifted the trophy in the final at Edgbaston.

But DTZ chased down the target to win by nine wickets with Lee Cartwright unbeaten on 35.

There was some creative fielding by the DWF captain Jack Cantwell who pulled off two stops, the first of which damaged his hand so badly he needed to use his face to stop the ball the second time!

Good early commitment from the DWF skipper!
