Transport Secretary Alistair Darling is to look into pleas for a railway station to serve Coventry's new 32,000-seat arena.

MPs have been pressing for a new station on the Coventry to Nuneaton line, which they say is vital for fans, as well as the thousands of staff who will be employed at the Ricoh Arena, which is the new home of Coventry City FC.

But the Strategic Rail Authority has rejected the plea, saying there is no sound business case for a station.

Now Mr Darling is to look into the SRA's decision, on behalf of local MPs.

The pledge was made by Mr Darling's Cabinet colleague Geoff Hoon, Leader of the Commons. Coventry MP Jim Cunningham (Lab Coventry South), speaking in the House of Commons, said he was concerned about " a lack of investment" in the line between the city and Nuneaton.

He said: "When are we going to have a debate on the Strategic Rail Authority, particularly on the lack of investment in the Coventry-Nuneaton line, and the need for a new station once the Coventry arena has opened?"

Mr Hoon told him: "It is obviously important that we continue to increase the funding available for the railway network.

"Network Rail has taken significant steps in recent times to stabilise the financial situation. Indeed, reports that I have received demonstrate that that has been remarkable successful. After a long period of difficulty it appears to be on a sensible track for the future."

Speaking afterwards, Mr Cunningham said: " Investment on this line is vital to the continued growth of the Coventry area.

"Particularly once the Coventry arena has opened, the government must address the issues of investment."

Coventry's MPs have waged a long campaign to get a new railway station at Rowleys Green, by the Ricoh Arena - even if trains initially will not be allowed to stop on match days.
