A flying instructor and his rookie pupil have been praised by police for helping them arrest three people believed to have stolen a caravan in rural Northumberland.

What should have been a routine lesson for first-time flyer Mark Blake turned into a police pursuit when instructor Steve Clarehugh spotted a group of people hitching up the caravan and towing it from a neighbour's field close to Eshott Airfield.

The airborne pair alerted police and Mr Clarehugh's neighbour then tracked the caravan from 1,500ft as it travelled along the A1 road.

The gang was stopped by police after turning off near Morpeth, in Northumberland.

Police said a 57-year-old woman was cautioned and two men, in their 30s, were released without charge.
