Dear Editor, Councillor Mullaney is never short of ideas, nor is he afraid to promote them even when they are little more than a twinkle in his eye.
Until this week he wanted the redundant Central Library to be a museum of photography or modern art. Before that he wanted a new rail station in Moseley with a link between Camp Hill and Moor Street. Then he wanted the people of Ladywood to have an Olympic swimming pool. He really badly wanted Birmingham to be City of Culture. Now he wants the Conservatoire to move into the basement of the Central Library, or the former Municipal Bank, or the old Registry Office site.
It must be some consolation to Councillor Mullaney to have the new Library of Birmingham to boast about even though the design, which he once described as ‘‘piled-up mattresses with the springs showing through’’ is clearly not what he wanted.
