A senior Walsall Council environmental health officer has been jailed for 18 months for carrying out a sex attack on a young girl and possessing child pornography.
Judge Mark Eades told 61-year-old David King he was satisfied he had developed an interest in pornographic websites.
King was also ordered to register as a sex offender for ten years and he was barred for life from ever working with children.
The judge further ruled his licence on release from custody should be extended to three years.
King, who lived in Pelsall before moving out of the area, had denied sexual assault on a child under 13 years of age.
But he was convicted at the end of his three day trial on an 11-1 majority verdict from a jury at Wolverhampton Crown Court.
The court was then told King had earlier admitted 16 charges of making indecent images of children.
The child pornography was found when police officers seized King's computer after his arrest on the sexual assault charge.
When questioned married King told police officers he had no sexual interest in children - he had the material out of "academic curiosity."
The Judge said it was clear King had become interested in child pornography and, over a period of more than a year, he had accessed the internet. ..SUPL:
