Dear Editor, I read with interest the article about the proposed building development in Harborne on land which currently has 14 mature trees, all of which have preservation orders.

I sincerely hope that Birmingham city councillors will not overlook these orders, the very purpose of which is, as I understand it, to protect them from profit driven property developers.

It grieves me to think that these beautiful trees, a rare patch of green in our urban landscape could be lost forever.

I also take issue with the comment that states the land is “overgrown and disused”.

The land is very much used by wildlife and provides a habitat for plants and insects.

There have been many articles in recent years about the plight of the bumble bee and I think green spaces should be preserved when ever possible.

The trees in questions are protected as I have already stated and as such should not be removed, I am sure there are plenty of other places wear could be built that would not have such a devastating impact on the environment.

Why not open this space up for use by the local people? I am sure there would be a lot of interest then the land could be managed effectively, for the benefit of all.
