Dear Editor, Re: Green groups welcome plans for shift of power to councils (Post, July 27)

Chris Crean’s comment is good as far as it goes. However, council’s are made up of individuals and until individuals change their behaviours, councils will not reduce their high energy consumption.

From what I have seen in nearly 40 years of full-time council work, there has been no reduction in energy consumption, only increases year on year.

Steady increases in staff, for a start!

Gandhi said, “Be the change you want to see in the world”. In other words, it starts with the individual’s actions. There has been no change, here, only higher emissions and more fossil fuel use. And, there are more individuals!
