Access has been blocked to controversial payday loan websites on nearly 300 publicly accessible computers across Dudley.

Council chiefs have moved to thwart contact with the lenders on its 271 library and community computers. The action, targeting 255 sites, aims to stop residents being drawn in to high-interest loans – while encouraging locals to take advantage of the borough’s own Castle and Crystal Credit Union.

The Dudley Council-backed credit union is available to residents, businesses, charities and voluntary groups. As well as savings accounts, members could find a range of loans.

Finance chief Coun Pete Lowe said: “High-profile companies such as Wonga.com and QuickQuid.com are just the tip of the iceberg. After reeling people in with promises of fast cash, payday lenders take full advantage by offering huge interest rates which can then leave their customers in more debt.”
