More than 1.8 million foreign workers have settled in Birmingham and the West Midlands since 2002, according to official figures.

The influx of economic migrants, mainly from eastern European countries, has prompted local authority leaders to warn of above-inflation council tax rises unless additional Government funding is made available to cope with the pressure on schools, houses, social services and hospitals.

Twenty-five councils, including Birmingham, have written to Home Secretary John Reid urging him to "establish the facts" about immigration.
