Coronation Street star Craig Charles has been arrested on suspicion of possession of a class A drug.

The 42-year-old (left), who plays cabbie Lloyd Mullaney, was suspended from the soap in June after newspaper pictures of him apparently smoking crack cocaine.

The shots allegedly showed him taking the drug in the back of a car on a journey from London to Manchester. A Scotland Yard spokesman said yesterday: "We can confirm a 42-year-old man attended a London police station on August 10, and was arrested on suspicion of possession of a class A drug. He was later released on bail and will return on a date in September, pending inquiries." Liverpool-born Charles made his name playing Dave Lister in the TV space comedy Red Dwarf. He has hosted BBC2's Robot Wars and taken part in Channel 4's The Games.

The married father-of-three joined Coronation Street last year.

He was arrested in 1994 over accusations he raped an ex-girlfriend, but after several months in custody was cleared after a trial at London's Southwark Crown Court.

The latest celebrity drug allegations come after the Metropolitan Police was forced to drop its investigation into supermodel Kate Moss's drug taking because they were unable to identify the substance she was consuming.
