Shoppers at Birmingham's Bullring have conflicting views about the cost of parking, as Elizabeth Caldicott discovered after talking to motorists using the Moor Street multi-storey.

Eve, a civil servant from Acocks Green: "I accept the fact that I have to pay, but believe that the rates should be improved."

Samina Ashraf, a shoe shop manager from Acocks Green: "Parking is too expensive, but I use the car park often as it is convenient. People parking at Merry Hill shouldn't have to pay."

Emma Riley, a teacher: "The situation at Merry Hill is another example of the council cashing in."

Gemma Anson, from Coventry: "Charging for parking at Merry Hill is yet another way to make money as it has been free for all this time."

Rachel Gill, hairdresser: "This is the first time that I have used the car park and it has proved to be very expensive. I would usually use the train but did not have time this morning.

"Shoppers at Merry Hill should not have to pay as they have never had to before. It is yet another money making scheme."
