A man fuelled by drink and drugs who carried out a knife attack on his former partner after forcing his way into her home has been jailed for six years at Birmingham Crown Court.

Mother-of-two Naomi Dennis fled to her neighbour's home but was pursued and stabbed by Simon Downer in their hallway.

Judge John Saunders QC said Miss Dennis had been on the phone trying to get the police when Downer broke in. Downer (28), of Victoria Road, Aston, admitted wounding with intent.

Adrian Keeling, prosecuting, said Downer had been told not to go to Miss Dennis's home in Verbena Gardens, Nechells, following a " messy and unpleasant" break up.

However, on March 21 after being refused entry, Downer broke in and began shouting and threatening to kill her. The defendant then attacked the victim punching her before trying to strangle the woman.

After breaking free Miss Dennis ran to a neighbour's house but undeterred Downer continued the attack and stabbed her in the stomach.

Talbir Singh, defending, said Downer had only intended to remonstrate with Miss Dennis about the care of their child.
