A Birmingham man arrested as part of an alleged plot to blow up transatlantic airliners was last night reported to have been freed by police without charge.

Reports said 22-year-old Tayib Rauf had been released from custody in the city. He was arrested on August 10.

Police were granted extra time last night to question nine suspects in custody over the alleged plot, Scotland Yard said.

Under new anti-terror laws, which only came into force earlier this year, terror suspects can now be questioned for up to 28 days.

The extensions granted yesterday are the first time any suspects have been held beyond the previous 14-day limit.

An 11th suspect is still being held, said the Yard. At City of Westminster Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, 11 people were remanded in custody in connection with the alleged plot.
