Lawyers at Birmingham City Council have won a top national award.

The legal-and-democratic services department beat off short-listed candidates to be named the Local Government Chronicle's legal team of the year. The award was presented by Black Country comedian Lenny Henry at a ceremony at the Grosvenor House Hotel in Park Lane, London.

Mirza Ahmad, council chief legal officer, paid tribute to the 300 members of his department.

"This is a great success for Birmingham and for all those who have worked hard to deliver on the continuous improvement agenda of the past five years.

"The latest national award is a fitting well done for staff who were highly commended last year for the same award and who have consistently demonstrated their commitment to excellence in local government."
