A Birmingham teenager has drowned while trying to cross a swollen stream at a popular holiday resort in Turkey.

Kayleigh Kim Lavill, aged 17, slipped and was swept away following heavy rain and flash floods in the Aegean town of Bodrum.

Her body was discovered over a mile away. Ms Lavill, who lived in Castle Vale, was believed to have been staying with a family member.

Last night Ms Lavill's friend Charlie Coley, also 17, said the local community was in shock.

"Kayleigh was a really nice person - a bit of a tomboy who was into her sport, especially football."

It is thought Ms Lavill used to play football for Aston Villa Ladies.

Ms Coley said Kayleigh went to Turkey with her aunt twice a year and had considered trying to move there.

"I saw her last Monday, a couple of days before she went on holiday and she was really looking forward to it. She loved the place and the people."

Floral tributes were laid in the garden of her Castle Vale home last night.
