A 19-year-old man was stabbed in a busy Birmingham city centre shopping precinct yesterday in what was described as an " unprovoked" attack.

The man was attacked in Martineau Place at about 1.45pm, by four black men dressed in dark clothing and baseball caps, said police.

He was taken to hospital but his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

Sgt Chris Wilkins of West Midlands Police said: "We believe this to have been an unprovoked attack at a time of day and location where there would be a number of people nearby. We appeal to anyone who witnessed it to contact the police."
