Christmas travellers in the West Midlands continued to face disruption to their getaway journeys, as the cold weather moved northwards affecting roads and public transport.

A number of accidents and breakdowns have led to delays on main routes, with a broken down vehicle causing delays on the M40 in Warwickshire.

The Highways Agency, which is responsible for England's motorways and major A roads, has lifted roadworks at 44 sites until midnight on January 3.

David Grunwell, from the Highways Agency, said: "Conditions are very challenging. Many people are travelling long distances, longer than they would normally. The key is very much to be prepared for the journey."

There was a marked north-south weather divide for Britain, with temperatures reaching as high as 7C or 8C (45-46F) in southern and south west England, but getting up to only around 2C (36F) in northern England.

Rail travellers will face disruption after Christmas from a number of planned engineering works in a £100 million programme organised by Network Rail.
