Birmingham University student Chris Smith has been named in the Norwich Union Great Britain and Northern Ireland Team for the IAAF World Junior Championships in Poland, between July 8-13.
The Wirral athlete is one of 11 male runners who took part in an ‘On Camp with Kelly’ Educational Camp in Loughborough in April, a mentoring initiative for talented young middle distance athletes which was this year opened up to males for the first time.
Smith, who will compete over 800m in Bydgoszcz, has improved his personal best by over four seconds this year to 1:48.20, comfortably inside the World Juniors qualifying standard of 1:49.00.
He is one of four ‘On Camp with Kelly’ athletes selected for the World Junior Championships. The others are Alison Leonard (Blackburn Harriers) in the women’s 800m, Emma Pallant (Aldershot, Farnham & District) in the women’s 1,500m and David Forrester (St Helen’s Sutton) - top European finisher in the Junior men’s race at the World Cross Country in March – in the men’s 1,500m.
They are joined by Birchfield Harrier Jordan McGrath, who runs the 400m, Edirin Okoro, who will go over the sprint hurdles and senior 400m Indoor champion Meghan Beesley in the 400m hurdles.
Beesley’s former Tamworth team-mate Nathan Woodward has been named to go over the men’s barriers.
The women’s team includes European Cross Country champion Steph Twell (AFD) in the 1500m, and sprinter Ashlee Nelson (City of Stoke).
