Birmingham was yesterday formally twinned with the Chinese city of Guangzhou.

The twinning agreement was signed by Council Leader Mike Whitby (Con Harborne) and Zhang Guangning, Mayor of Guangzhou, at a VIP dinner.

The city and province is home to 10 million people and is at the heart of China's manufacturing industry. Others twinned with Birmingham include Chicago in the USA, Frankfurt and Leipzig in Germany, Johannesburg in South Africa, Lyon in France and Milan in Italy.
