An application by a city centre bar to remain open until 6am has prompted objections from a nearby hospital.

Birmingham Children's Hospital is urging the city council's licensing committee to reject an application by Chambers for longer opening hours - until 2am Mondays to Wednesdays and until 6am the rest of the week.

In a letter to the committee, the hospital's head of facilities complained of a history of problems stemming from customers using the bar in Corporation Street.

"Previously, when the premises were open under various ownerships, the problems created by both the management and customers were very distressing for patients, staff and visitors," the letter said.

Examples raised by the Children's Hospital include bottle-throwing, excessively l oud music and drunks attempting to enter the casualty department late at night.

The letter went on: "Within the accident and emergency building, there are three wards in which very sick children are treated and it is necessary that the children have as much undisturbed sleep as possible.

"The parents of these and other children are allowed to visit without restriction. Many sleep by the side of their children and are often more distressed than the patients."

Chambers' application will be considered tomorrow.
