The mother and grandmother of a six-month-old boy whose body was dumped in a culvert have had criminal charges against them dropped.

Danielle Simpson, 17, and Theresa Simpson, 47, were charged with conspiracy to pervert the course of justice in February after Troy Simpson was found dead in Smethwick.

The pair were arrested along with the father of the baby, Sherwain Smith, after he was reported missing from his home in The Uplands, Smethwick, on February 7.

A post-mortem failed to establish the cause of the baby's death.

Smith, 20, of Arden Road, Smethwick, is still facing a conspiracy charge and last appeared at Birmingham Crown Court on April 19.

A West Midlands Police spokeswoman confirmed: "The case has been discontinued against the two women due to insufficient evidence.

"The case against the third defendant continues."
