Walsall player-manager Paul Merson has taken Aston Villa's Jamie Ward and former Shrewsbury midfielder Mark Briggs on trial.
Merson, who is holding fire on negotiating his contract at the Saddlers until they are mathematically safe from relegation, knows Torquay remain a threat after their 1-0 victory over Port Vale on Saturday.
"Mathematically we are not quite safe but the other teams have to pull up trees to catch us," said Merson.
