Rush hour traffic in the centre of Birmingham was brought to a standstill last night after a car caught fire.

Motorists were stuck for more than an hour after the accident at about 6pm in St Chad's Queensway. Traffic was halted from Great Charles Street Queensway and Lancaster Circus to the Aston Expressway.

A West Midlands Police spokeswoman said: "Diversions were put into place taking traffic out of the city down the A38."

Motorists were also hit by heavy traffic on the M6 from junction one in Rugby to 19 in Leicester after a lorry collided with three cars, one of which caught fire. The southbound lane was closed from 5.10pm for most of the evening.
