Birmingham’s minicab drivers have missed a golden opportunity to raise standards and improve the city’s image after council plans to introduce single colour cabs were scrapped, it was claimed last night.

Proposals for single colour private hire cars, similar to New York’s yellow cabs, were formally dropped in the face of opposition from drivers – including a protest by 3,000 cabbies at a public consultation meeting at Villa Park last November. But licensing committee member Peter Kane said: “You have missed a golden opportunity to enhance the profile and status of your trade and improve the image of the city.”
