A burglar linked to a pet shop break-in after an angry parrot pecked him and left a trail of blood at the scene walked free from court yesterday.

Labourer Tristan Maidment (23) was caught after police found enough blood on the floor beside Micky the Macaw's cage to get a DNA sample.

Maidment, from Edington in Wiltshire, broke into Frome Pet and Aquatic Centre in the Somerset town and stole the 50-year-old parrot - unaware of Micky's notorious bad temper and dis-like of strangers.

The moody blue and gold bird lashed out and pecked Maidment on the hand as he attempted to stuff him into a cage.

Maidment admitted burglary and two animal cruelty offences and also pleaded guilty to theft, two deception charges, driving offences and failing to surrender to bail.

Yesterday, Frome Magistrates' Court imposed a six-month suspended sentence on Maidment and ordered treatment for alcoholism.
