Nuneaton Borough have ended a lengthy pursuit to secure former West Bromwich Albion skipper Daryl Burgess for the new season.
Burgess, who has made more than 500 League appearances, has signed a one-year contract after Boro manager Roger Ashby finally clinched his signature.
Burgess, who had spent last season at Kidderminster but was not offered a new deal, was also a target for Hucknall but the Water-Orton-based played opted for Manor Park.
Burgess was involved for the first time last night when Boro defeated Wycombe Wanderers 3-1 in a friendly, thanks to goals by Neil Moore, Gary McPhee and Martin Reeves.
Ashby said: "I needed another central defender and in Daryl we've have someone who has played at the top level and still has the hunger and drive to win things.
"His attitude is first class and he will add to the competition for places. He's a leader, a good organiser and strong in the air.
"Daryl joins Neil Moore and Derek Brown to contend for the central positions at the back and now I'm looking to get a versatile full-back in to complete a squad I think can win the league."
However, Boro have lost front-runner Brian Quailey who has joined Nationwide Conference new boys Stafford Rangers on a free transfer.
