We may have pubs, bars and nightclubs galore, but only one in three Brummies can actually spell the word drunkenness.

People from Birmingham scored an average of just 62 per cent in a spelling test conducted to test the nation's spelling prowess.

Some of the most commonly misspelled words in the region were misspelled (87 per cent incorrect), accommodation (70 per cent incorrect) and diarrhoea (60 per cent incorrect). Overall, females made fewer errors than males, although the best spellers were 18-40 year-old males.

The survey was conducted by BookForce UK to launch their Undiscovered Authors Writing competition. The competition has a national prize of £10,000. Budding authors can find out more at undiscoveredauthors.co.uk.
