Birmingham could be the home of the Chinese Olympics team in 2012, a leading city councillor said yesterday.
Coun Ken Hardeman, cabinet member for regeneration, said Birmingham already has strong links with the Chinese.
Council chiefs are now considering inviting athletes from China to stay in Birmingham and use the city's sporting facilities.
Coun Hardeman ( Con Brandwood) said: "This is not a decision I can make on my own but I have already voiced my opinion that Birmingham could be a potential base for the Chinese."
Birmingham has already set up student exchange programmes with Chinese educational institutions, Coun Hardeman said.
He added: "It may be another team that comes to Birmingham, but I think we would be a good base city."
