Birmingham has been awarded the accolade of being the cleanest place in Britain.

At the Clean Britain Awards ceremony yesterday, the city stole the crown from last year's winner, the City of London.

It brushed off local rivals Coventry, and Oadby and Wigston, to be named the overall winner and also won the Cleanest City category.

The competition, originally known as Britain's Cleanest City, was re-launched last year as the Clean Britain Awards by the British Cleaning Council (BCC) to allow towns and districts to enter in addition to cities.

Judges from the cleaning industry used Government-approved standards to judge each destination as well as viewing the streets through the eyes of a tourist.

Judith West, BCC chairman, said: "Our judges scoured the streets and were impressed at the overall condition of the city centre."
