Rod Brown labelled Bromsgrove Rovers' decision to fire him six months after leading them to promotion as a "knee-jerk reaction".

Brown's 22 months in charge at the Victoria Ground was ended on Monday after British Gas Business Premier side Rovers' 2-1 weekend defeat at Banbury United left them without a win for nine matches.

But Brown, who is based in Bromsgrove, revealed he had had to deal with a cut in the wages budget as well as trying to rebuild the squad.

"I don't feel I've failed - I feel the club and the board have failed me," said Brown. "We had lost five games in 13 and we were sitting eighth in the league when I was told the budget was being cut.

"Since then we have not won a game. There's been a lot of uncertainty and the players' confidence has gone downhill. But I was certain we were turning things around. I came from an era when loyalty was paramount. It's a knee-jerk reaction.

"There have been rumours about me being linked with the vacancy at Worcester City in the last few weeks and Tom said he didn't want me to go anywhere. Then I am relieved of my duties."

Brown, who has also steered Redditch United and Stourport Swifts to promotion, met chairman Tom Herbert and company secretary Steve Daniels on Monday when they told him of their decision.

But Brown remains baffled as to the exact reasons.

"The only thing they said was that they were relieving me of my duties due to outside influences. What does that mean?" said Brown.

A brief club statement said: "The directors of Bromsgrove Rovers Football Club would like to announce the departure of Rod Brown as manager, and thank him for all his previous work at the club."

Rovers player-assistant Carl Heeley is also expected to exit the club.
