British rescue specialists from SARAID (Search and Rescue Assistance in Disasters) have flown out to help with the rescue efforts.

The 12-strong group of volunteers said they were planning to stay in Pakistan for a week.

As well as cutting equipment, they had with them fibre optic probes and sound location equipment for finding people in the rubble.

Rob Davis, leader of the group, which tended to victims in Sri Lanka after the Asian tsunami earlier this year and after the earthquake in Algeria two years ago, said: "We are hoping to do some good.

"Hopefully we can rescue some people who are trapped."
