A member of the UK armed forces was killed in Afghanistan yesterday during operations against "insurgent positions".

It happened in the lawless Helmand province in the south of the country, the Ministry of Defence said in a statement.

NATO said the victim was a soldier who was shot as forces pushed into a lawless mountainous district to assert government control.

The soldier was taking part in an attack on insurgents in Helmand's Musa Qala, where three British soldiers were killed last week, according to a NATO statement.

It brings to ten the number of soldiers who have been killed in Helmand in the past two months.
