A nine-year-old boy died after he was taken ill while staying at the Alton Towers theme park in Staffordshire.

The youngster, who was from the London area, had been staying at the Alton Towers Hotel with his parents and sister when he was taken ill at about 3.30am yesterday.

The theme park's own first aiders were called to the scene and alerted paramedics after the boy woke up with breathing difficulties.

A doctor in an ambulance was also called and emergency treatment was carried out at the scene.

A spokesman for Staffordshire Ambulance Service said the boy was taken to the University Hospital of North Staffordshire by land ambulance after paramedics were told a police helicopter was not available.

But despite attempts to revive him he was pronounced dead at the hospital at 5.30am.

Police said the death was not being treated as suspicious.

A Staffordshire Police spokesman added: "Police have attended Alton Towers and inquiries are in hand surrounding the circumstances of the death."

A spokeswoman for Alton Towers said: "This is an extremely sad incident. The little boy woke up with breathing difficulties and died of natural causes. We will do whatever is necessary to help all inquiries to determine the precise cause of death."
