An eight-year-old boy was in a critical condition in hospital yesterday after the jet ski he was riding careered off a lake and smashed into a car.

The youngster was seriously injured after accident at the West Country Water Park, in Almondsbury, Gloucestershire, on Wednesday night.

The boy, who has not be named, had apparently lost control after turning in the wrong direction and rode the jet ski off the lake, across a car park, through a hedge and into the Rover car. Police confirmed the car was being driven along the road at the time of the collision.

The boy was taken to Frenchay Hospital, Bristol, following the accident, where his condition was described as critical.

An Avon and Somerset Police spokeswoman said: "We were called to a road traffic accident on Trench Lane, Almondsbury, on Wednesday to a collision between a jet ski and a Rover car at 6.12pm.

"The eight-year-old boy who was riding the jet ski was taken to Frenchay Hospital with serious injuries and remains in a critical condition.

"The jet ski was being driven in the West Country Water Park.

"Before the collision the jet ski left the lake, went across the car park, through a hedge and collided with a car.

"The driver of the Rover was uninjured. The road was closed while police investigated the crash."

Police said they believed the boy was riding the jet ski legally and are treating the accident as a "road collision".

An eyewitness said: "The kid was on a jet ski, he took a right turn when he should have taken a left. He came off the jet ski and ended up hitting a car."
