An 11-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of setting fire to a Black Country primary school.

Eight fire crews were called to Elston Hall Primary School, in Fordhouses, Wolverhampton, on Monday night.

Flames tore through 15 per cent of the roof at the Stafford Road school, but the fire was brought under control by ten firefighters in breathing apparatus. They used four main jets on the blaze as well as a hydraulic platform to help tackle the fire.

A West Midlands Fire service spokesman said their swift intervention prevented “significant damage to the remainder of the school”.

Police had also been called out, at around 8.10pm, following reports of a break-in at the school. They discovered a large fire had started on the roof of the building.

No injuries were reported.

The 11-year-old arson suspect was detained by police today.
