The body of a woman believed to be missing Shrewsbury kayaker Elizabeth Ashbee has been found in the sea off the North Wales coast.

The mother-of-two, 53, became separated from four colleagues in difficult rocky waters on Sunday afternoon at Ynys Feurig, or Starvation Island, close to Rhosneigr, North Wales.

The body was found in the sea off the Lleyn peninsula.

Search and rescue teams found her red Avocet kayak on the beach at Morfa Nefyn, 20 miles from where she vanished.

Ms Ashbee is thought to have entered the water wearing a dry suit and buoyancy aid.

Holyhead RNLI and two RAF helicopters were involved in the search with a North Wales Police helicopter.

Coastguard teams were broadcasting pan signals - to alert shipping that the search had resumed following the discovery of the kayak and to ask for help.

Her colleagues from Shrewsbury Canoe Club also travelled to the area to help look for her.

A spokesman for the Coastguard said: "The search for a missing female kayaker has been called off after the body of a woman was found in the sea off the Lleyn peninsula this evening."
