David Blunkett's diaries are to be broadcast on Channel 4 in a two-part special which the broadcaster hopes will lift the lid on the inner workings of New Labour.

The audio diaries were made during his eight years in the Labour Cabinet and are described as "a unique view of how Labour have been operating from the inside".

The former Home Secretary, who resigned from the Cabinet for the final time in 2005, will also speak about his time at the heart of Government in extensive interviews in the Dispatches special.

Programme-makers will also interview some of Mr Blunkett's former political colleagues for the programme, which has been secured by the broadcaster that famously lampooned Mr Blunkett in the satirical drama A Very Social Secretary.

The diaries, which were originally recorded onto tape, are set to be published in book form in October.
