This was the scene last night in Austria when Birmingham City’s opening pre-season friendly of their tour was washed out, writes Colin Tattum.
Blues were due to play non-League side Kirchberg in Westendorf but persistent heavy rainfall waterlogged the pitch. The players managed to train on the surface in the morning, but it got progressively worse throughout the day and the decision was taken to postpone around three hours before kick-off. The match will now be played this evening at 7pm local time.
Manager Alex McLeish won’t be too despairing as it provided some of his players with extra recovery time. James McFadden had been nursing a sore knee but trained well and joined in ball drills, and Cameron Jerome should be available after a groin problem.
Damien Johnson was the only member of the 22-strong group absent from training yesterday due to illness. The club are not expected to receive clearance to field trialists Zola Matumona, a Congo midfielder from FC Brussels, and French defender Yamoudou Camara, of AS Nancy.
