A pensioner from Bloxwich, Walsall who cooks and cares for several of her neighbours has been honoured for her community spirit.
Margaret Peach, 72, was officially presented with a Community Spirit award by Walsall Housing Group (WHG) at her home on Wednesday.
The Hilton Close resident cooks Sunday dinner for four of her neighbours, makes tea everyday for two of them and regularly keeps one neighbour company in the evening with a game of cards and a chat over a cup of tea.
She has helped decorate several of her neighbours' flats, shops for a number of them and is known by local people as the "spirit of Hilton Close".
Judges were so impressed by her actions they awarded her first prize in the good neighbour category.
Margaret has received a new cooker and kitchen utensils as a prize, along with £50 which she will spend on a Christmas party for neighbours.
Neighbour Valerie Selvey, 52, is among those who enjoy one of Margaret's home-cooked roast dinners.
Valerie, who nominated Margaret for the award, said: "Margaret is a wonderful woman. I don't know where she gets her energy from. Her dinners are so big, I often save some for supper."
Margaret said: "When I first moved in here everyone kept to themselves; now it's a real community.
"I have to kill time because I'm not idle so I'm always looking for things to do. I really love Sundays when all the plates are out ready for dinner."
Community Spirit was launched by WHG to reward good work across the borough. The scheme's categories are good neighbour, community garden champion and outstanding young person.
Ann Parkes, WHG customer services manager, said: "Our customers are doing marvellous things in the community and WHG is pleased to recognise and reward them for the hard work they do, day in day out.
"We have rewarded eight Community Spirit winners so far with prizes ranging from garden vouchers to a new cooker and are always looking out for community-minded people who fit the bill."
The next deadline for nominations is February 19, 2010. Nomination forms can be downloaded from www.whg.uk.com or collected from any WHG local housing office.
