A Birmingham mother and son were still fighting for their lives last night after a New Year's Day fire which killed another family member.

The fire at the semi-detached house in Lea Hall had already claimed the life of a 35-year-old disabled man, named by neighbours as Karl Salloway.

However his 61-year-old mother, Yvonne, remains in a "critical condition" in hospital, a West Midlands Police spokeswoman said yesterday. The condition of her 31-year-old son, named by neighbours as Luke, was described as "serious".

The fire, described by police as a tragic accident, broke out at the house in Fellmeadow Road at 4.50am when the property was filled with the couple's grown up children and grandchildren.

Ten family members were taken to hospital, including children aged five, 11, 13 and 15.

Yvonne was in a coma at Heartlands Hospital, unaware her son had died. Luke, her youngest child, is also at the hospital.
