Police launched a murder hunt yesterday after a man was found battered to death in a Black Country alleyway.
The victim, in his late 20s or early 30s, died shortly after being found by police in Freer Street, Walsall, at 1.30am.
Described as Asian or of dark European appearance, the man has not yet been identified by police. Detectives appealed for anyone with information about the circumstances leading to his death to contact them.
He was found in an alleyway behind premises in Freer Street. The scene was sealed off for forensic examination and house-to-house inquiries. A post mortem examination concluded he had died "as a result of a serious and sustained assault", a West Midlands Police spokeswoman said last night.
"Officers are treating the death as murder," she added.
Police are appealing for anyone in the Freer Street, Bridge Street, Goodhall Street and Lichfield Street area between midnight and 1.45am yesterday morning to contact Walsall CID on 0845 113 5000.
